Strange Tales
Underwater ironing record
07Apr08
MARCH 30 saw the great challenge for Vision Divers of Essendon to beat the Guinness World Record for the most people ironing underwater at the same time.
There were some nail-biting moments as we watched the weather reports for the few days before.
But as Victorian divers are never afraid of a bit of chop we headed down to St Leonards. We could not let an opportunity like this go by.
Tension mounted as organisers and participants watched the count to see whether we had enough divers to beat the record, and lo and behold the moment finally came.
The record was 70 divers in a pool and we were looking to beat the record in the ocean. At the end of the day we beat it by two.
Can you imagine for a moment what it is like getting 72 divers, irons, and ironing boards and a piece of clothing to iron into the water?
Like troopers, the divers solved the challenges in the name of beating the record. Some divers got all dressed up for the occasion, wearing suits, hospital gowns or hats over their wetsuits.
Debby Azzopardi, an assistant instructor with Vision Divers, set the challenge and organised the event with the assistance of family and friends.
Congratulations to Debby for an awesome result.
Congratulations to all participants who are now officially Guinness World Record holders. Proceeds from the day, $864, were donated to Project AWARE dedicated to conserving underwater environments.
